Moving Strategy
Phase I Planning
(As soon as you
know the closing date)
Use a calendar
and a note pad to help you organize. Preferably dont use the Calendar or
the Legal pad for any other planning or events than information on the move.
Pick the date you will be moving in relation to the Closing Date of
your new home. Mark it on your Calendar.
Identify how many
days there are between your planning day and your target move-in day.
On your legal pad
make a list of all the things that need to be done before your move:
- Chamber
Information
- School
Information
- Truck Rental
or borrowing from friends or family if you dont have a truck of your own.
- Recruiting
moving help
- Change of
Address information
- Utilities and
phone changes
- Etc.
- There will be
many personal loose ends that youll need to wrap up too.
Try to be as
thorough as possible with your list and be aware there will always be something
you forgot so keep the legal pad and calendar in a place where you can easily
get to it and add to the list
especially once the move begins and your
current home is less than organized.
Once youve completed your list of To-Dos Before the
Move
begin to plot out on your calendar with a target date for each task
to be completed. Try to space out the tasks as much as possible so you give
your self some flexibility if the task is not done exactly on the target date.
Cramming everything into the last week before the move will only make the move
more stressful.
Last but not
least, stay focused on the plan
its easy to get distracted and
sentimental when packing up things you havent looked at in months or
years
this will only drag out the moving process.
Phase II Action
The plan is in
place now its time to take action. Here are some guidelines you
might want to consider.
As soon as the
plan is done contact the local Chamber and School District of the Community
your moving into and request an information packet.
Contact a Truck Rental Company to make arrangements
for a vehicle if you dont have access to an adequate moving
vehicle.
Collect all your
most important information (i.e. Medical and Financial Records, Marriage
License, Birth Certificates, Legal Documents, Insurance Records, etc) and put
them in one box in a safe easy to get to location.
About one month
prior to the move notify others of your change of address and the effective
date:
- Friends and
family members
- Banks,
insurance companies, and other financial institutions
- Credit card
companies
- Magazine and
newspaper publishers
- Doctors,
dentists, and other service providers
- Book and music
clubs
- State and
federal tax authorities and any other government agencies)
Recruit
moving-day help.
Inform gas,
electric, water, phone, and local cable service providers of your move.
Sign up for the
above services at your new address.
If using a moving
company, ask about payment requirements.
Arrange to close
or transfer your bank account.
Confirm rental
truck or moving company reservation
Phase III The Moment of Truth
(The Day before
the move)
Set aside moving
materials, like tape measure, pocket knife, rope

in your car.
Get a good
night's rest!
